TRANSITION

The transition from secondary school to college can be daunting, but this is an exciting opportunity and we are working hard to ensure you get the best start to college in September and we look forward to meeting you.

We are aware that some of you are holding offers for a place at Kirklees College and have not had the opportunity to speak to any tutors about your course. We have also been approached by some applicants who are wanting to start doing some research and preparation for their new course in September which is fantastic!

If you’d like to take a tour of your centre of study before you arrive, you can watch our centre tours here.

To help you prepare for your new course we have created some handy course fact sheets, which you should have received in the post, but are available to view on this page too. Just scroll down to find your course area’s fact sheet.

If you have any questions about your course or would like to talk to a tutor directly then you can email applications@kirkleescollege.ac.uk and they will be able to forward your questions to a tutor for a response or arrange for them to contact you. We have a list of frequently asked questions for applicants on our website.

More information about enrolling at college after GCSE Results Day will be made available at the start of July.

Everything you need to know

Some courses may require you to dress in accordance to the industry standards, for example, chef whites for kitchen classes and tunics for Hair and Beauty, but the rest of the time you can wear what you want.

Yes. When you enrol at college just bring your phone with you and we will show you how to link to the FREE college Wi-Fi.

Yes. We have a fully equipped gym at our Huddersfield Waterfront Centre which offers FREE membership to our students. The gym includes free weights, cardio machines and exercise classes.

We have our very own Starbucks which is based in Landings 72. This is one of the college restaurants which is available to students.

Yes. Approximately 500 of our Level 3 learners enrol at some of the country’s top universities every year. They have gone onto study some amazing degrees including Optometry, Zoology, Criminology, Midwifery and many more.

You will pick one subject to study full-time. Your chosen subject will form part of your study programme which is designed around your individual needs, your education and employment goals.

We are dedicated to providing our students with the best education experience possible. As part of your course, you will do at least 30 hours of work placement, to help you gain an insight into an industry, build your confidence and learn skills that are valued by employers.

Vocational courses combine theory and practical learning that relate to a specific job or career sector you are interested in working in. You will study for approximately 18.5 hours a week to develop advantageous skills that employers want and should increase your chances of securing a job within your preferred area.

With an Apprenticeship, you will earn a wage whilst you work. It’s usually four days a week working, supported by one day a week of study at college. Employment must be secured to become an apprentice.
