What could you be doing after your GCSEs?
At Kirklees College, we have a team of people dedicated to helping you decide what you want to do after your GCSEs. From taster sessions, competitions, career advice, and activities, our team is there to answer all your questions and help you get the most out of every opportunity we have available.
Taster Sessions
Taster sessions are an excellent way for you to try a subject area before you enrol on the course. Our taster sessions are available to years 9 – 13, and would normally take place in college either during the school day or in a twilight session after school.
What are taster sessions?
With so many options available to you, deciding what to do when you finish school can be a difficult decision to make. To help make your decision easier, the Student Recruitment team host a variety of activities across our different curriculum areas to see what you enjoy and make the move to college less daunting.

We would like to invite budding chefs from all our surrounding schools to take part in our Young Chef of the Year competition.
If you’re an aspiring young chef, we can help provide guidance and encouragement towards a cooking career.
The competition is open to students in years 9, 10 and 11 and we also have an online competition for students in years 7 & 8. The closing date for both competitions is Friday 17 March 2023 at 12pm. Please see the brief and guidelines.
Should you have any questions or want to register your interest, please contact us via sturec@kirkleescollege.ac.uk

Each contestant should create a restaurant-style plated dessert and email us pictures of:
- A) the recipe
- B) student making the dish
- C) student with the dish
- D) students’ final dish

Each contestant will have two hours to create and serve 4 portions of a restaurant-style plated dessert and sweet sauce of their choice.
Up to 16 students will be selected to compete. The heats will take place on 3 May 2023 with the final taking place on 14 June 2023. For more information, view the competition guidelines.
Photography Competition 2023
Do you have a passion for photography?
We would like to invite individuals from all our surrounding schools to get creative with our photography competition.
This year’s theme is Human Portraiture. We want you to capture a portrait of someone you know. You could use a friend, a family member or even do a self-portrait! Try to portray the persons physical attributes and their emotions. Look at the different types of portraiture that exist as you might decide to do your portrait as painting or sculpture rather than a traditional photo. If you do decide to do a painting or sculpture, please email us a picture of your finished portrait.
The competition is open to students in Years 9 – 11. Students should send us one image via email with an entry form. All entry forms must include a short summary of why the image represents ‘Human Portraiture’. The deadline for entries is Friday 21 April 2023 at 12pm.
