Course Overview

The Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Lifelong Learning validated through the University of Huddersfield and is designed for those wishing to teach in the post-16 education and training sector.This includes Further Education (FE) colleges, sixth-form colleges, adult and community education, work-based learning, and more. The course is underpinned by the Learning and Skills Teacher Occupational Standard and emphasizes reflective practice, inclusive pedagogy, and evidence-informed teaching strategies. You will develop both generic and subject specialist teaching skills.
You will study four 30-credit modules, typically at Level 6 (Graduate level), including: Research Informed Teaching, Learning and Assessment; Becoming a Subject Specialist Teacher; Being a Subject Specialist Teacher. You will also complete one of the following, depending on availability and focus area: Curriculum and Context; EDI and Social Justice: Curriculum and Context; English as an Additional Language: Curriculum and Context, or SEND: Curriculum and Context.
The Teaching Practice Requirement for this course is a miinimum 250 hours of practice (150 teaching hours). Your formal written assignments will be uploaded to Brightspace to be checked against Turnitin software.
In completing the module assignments and observations you will be able to show that you are addressing the Learning and Skills Teacher Occupational Standard along with a number of themes which are seen as essential elements within the professional repertoire and activity of a teacher or trainer: Behaviour Management; Equality and Diversity and Social Justice; Subject specialist pedagogy; English and Maths; Digital Literacies; Professional Development.

You must have a UK Honours Degree (Level 6 or equivalent) in a subject that aligns with your intended teaching specialism, and Level 2 qualifications in English and Mathematics (e.g., GCSE Grade C/4 or equivalent). You must also currently be in a teaching placement or employment in a setting that allows you to meet the course teaching requirements (if in-service or part-time pre-service). You will also need a satisfactory DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check and health clearance and evidence of commitment to working in the post-compulsory education sector.

You can progress to QTLS through the Society for Education and Training (SET), or Master’s-level study (e.g., Postgraduate Diploma in Education, MA Education).

£4,250 per year. You could pay for this course using a learning loan. Further information is available at Student Finance England.
Careers in teaching are varied and rewarding. Once fully qualified you can teach students aged 14 upwards in secondary schools, the Further Education sector or Higher Education.
