Course Overview

The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) – Lifelong Learning validated through the University of Huddersfield and is designed for graduates who aspire to teach in the post-compulsory education and training sector, such as Further Education (FE) colleges, adult and community education, work-based learning, and more. This course is aimed at those who already hold a degree and want to pursue a career in teaching or training learners aged 14 and above. It combines academic study with practical teaching experience, focusing on evidence-based practice, professional reflection, and inclusive education in diverse lifelong learning contexts.
The PGCE Lifelong Learning consists of three compulsory 30-credit modules studied at Level 7 (Masters level): Research Informed Teaching, Learning and Assessment; Becoming a Subject Specialist Teacher, and Being a Subject Specialist Teacher. You will then complete a fourth 30 credit module from the following: Curriculum and Context; EDI and Social Justice: Curriculum and Context; English as an Additional Language: Curriculum and Context, or SEND: Curriculum and Context.
The Teaching Practice Requirement for this course is: a minimum of 250 hours of practice, of which at least 150 hours must be direct teaching; at least 20 hours must be completed in a different teaching context (second placement); teaching diverse learners across a range of subjects, levels, and contexts, and online teaching (up to 20 hours) may be included.
Formal written assignments will be uploaded to Brightspace to be checked against Turnitin software.
In completing the module assignments and observations you will be able to show that you are addressing the Learning and Skills Teacher Occupational Standard along with a number of themes which are seen as essential elements within the professional repertoire and activity of a teacher or trainer:Behaviour Management; Equality and Diversity and Social Justice; Subject specialist pedagogy; English and Maths; Digital Literacies and Professional Development.

A UK first degree at 2:2 or above in a relevant subject area, and Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths (e.g. GCSE Grade C/4 or equivalent. You must have a placement or employment that supports the course’s teaching requirements (for part-time and in-service), and show commitment to working in the lifelong learning sector. A satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check must also be obtained.

£4,250 per year. You could pay for this course using a learning loan. Further information is available at Student Finance England.
