To celebrate Colleges Week here at Kirklees College, we would like to promote some of our amazing English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students!

Kirklees College is one of the largest providers of ESOL courses in the region. Our courses are designed for students who do not speak English as a first language. From Entry Level upwards, we focus on improving English listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar with the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification. We also teach our students real life skills, maths and digital skills to equip them with the correct skills for the workplace.

Despite difficult personal circumstances, our students always seem to overcome these barriers to gain their qualification. Mohammad ‘Kinan’ Mohammad is one example of this. His tutor said:

“He is determined to stay at Kirklees College and make as much progress as he can with his English, sticking to his strict one-year plan, and has continued attending, learning, studying hard, asking probing questions and sharing his ever-growing knowledge of English with his classmates, even notwithstanding his difficult personal circumstances.”

The KC community is something we are always delighted to see in action, whether that be inside or outside the classroom. Mei Yoong Loke is an example of how our students are demonstrating our values of kindness and excellence. Her tutor commented:

“She is a really hard-working student, always trying to help others in class and she’s been doing so much voluntary work for different charities outside of school.”

Lana Hamdi also volunteers in a charity shop once a week. She packs in the warehouse and practices her English with the other volunteers.   She has also taken home-cooking and flowers for her co-workers.

Inside the classroom, our students are also happy to enrich the community by supporting those around them. Golaleh Mahmoudi’s tutor had this to say about her:

“She is a very hardworking, dedicated student who is a positive and encouraging influence in our group. She is always helpful to others and tries her hardest at all the tasks.”
