Former Computing student Mohammed Hussain Patel, known as Hussain, has overcome numerous challenges to graduate from Leeds Beckett University.

After leaving school with low GCSE results, one of the careers advisors at Kirklees College advised him to study for a Level 2 Diploma in Information Technology.

Hussain enrolled on the course and was later diagnosed with dyslexia whilst studying at Kirklees College. He said that it was his tutors who first recognised that he was dyslexic and gave him further support to complete his studies.

Speaking about his diagnosis, Hussain said:

“Whilst studying on the level two IT course, my tutors began to suspect I was a dyslexic. They saw various symptoms which my teachers at school had not been able to detect. I would never have realised my condition if the tutors at Kirklees College had not had the experience of detecting the tell-tale signs in the first place.”

Hussain also had to deal with numerous other health conditions, including anaemia, asthma, poor vision and difficulty hearing in his left ear.

Hussain did not give up hope and with sheer determination he was able to progress from a Level 2 course through to the Level 3 Information Technology course with a Distinction grade in 2017. Following encouragement from his college tutors, he enrolled on his BSC Degree in Information Technology and recently attended this year’s graduation ceremony.

Speaking about his experience at Kirklees College, Hussain added:

“My tutors at Kirklees College were very helpful, very friendly, highly professional and they helped me a great deal to pass my IT diploma. I would recommend Kirklees College to others because of the positive experience which I had whilst I studied there.”

Hussain is now keen to share his education journey to help other young people who may be in the same position as him.

There are still places available to study Computing at Kirklees College from this September. For more information, visit https://www.kirkleescollege.ac.uk/enrolment-2022/.
