Ravi Takhar has become the first Kirklees College student to pass his English GCSE with a 9. Ravi enrolled at Kirklees College Huddersfield Centre in September 2020 and took his English GCSE in summer 2021, coming first in his results out of over 1,500 students.
Ravi left school at 16 to work in a printing firm in Leeds before he had received any qualifications. Since then he has always been in full-time work in a variety of career pathways, before settling in the fitness and leisure industry.
Having decided that he wanted to push himself and finally take his English GCSE to further himself professionally, he enrolled at Kirklees College and began his courses with English lecturer Shirle Janes.
Ravi’s result is even more outstanding when considering the challenges facing the 2020 cohort and the effects of the pandemic.
This week, Ravi returned to Kirklees College and spent some time with current English GCSE students at our Huddersfield Centre. Ravi gave the students some of his tips for passing the exams, advising them to use old past papers, incorporate repetition into their revision and make it an enjoyable process that they can dip in and out of.
Passing the English GCSE has opened new doors for Ravi. He has interviews lined up for becoming a paramedic and a policeman and his prospects look fantastic.
Well done Ravi. Kirklees College wishes you all the best with your future endeavours.
Ravi said:
“Shirle’s style of teaching was nothing more than a perfect fit for the course. I can say with my hand on my heart, I don’t think I could have come this far if it wasn’t for Shirle.
She held my attention, she was informative and approachable. I felt at ease with her; she signposted the numerous ways for me to explore further aspects which ultimately ensured that I gained a much more rounded attitude and perspective of the course and English.
I really enjoyed studying at Kirklees College. Anyone that is thinking that they might want to get the English GCSE should just go for it. I’m so glad I did.”
Lecturer Shirle added:
“It was a privilege and joy to teach Ravi last year. I really enjoyed our online classes throughout the pandemic. Both student and teacher alike were forced to adapt to an unprecedented situation. Ravi’s enthusiasm for learning, knowledge and life, in general, was infectious and everyone in the class benefitted from his curiosity.
From the heart, Ravi, thank you for being my student and wishing you the very best in your future ventures.”
