Kirklees College is pleased to announce it is working in partnership with Locorum on their Model Citizens project.

Locorum is a community development organization based in Huddersfield Town Centre. Their mission is to improve health and wellbeing outcomes in communities, with a particular focus on engaging young people aged 14–21 years.

One of the biggest challenges we face in the local community is the rise in knife crime and violence among young people. The Model Citizens is a programme that supports young people who are often NEET status, don’t have a high disposable income and are vulnerable to exploitation and involvement in crime to develop the skills they need to overcome the challenges they face.

With support from the Mayor’s Fund, the partnership will be able to provide workspace and facilities for our young people, as well as opportunities for self-development through workshops. The project is also broadcasting a regular podcast from Kirklees College to inform parents, families and the wider community about health, wellbeing, and digital inclusion to make a positive impact on the lives of young people and their families.

Warren Dunn, Curriculum Area Manager for Creative Industries at Kirklees College said:

“We are delighted to be working with Locorum on this exciting new project. As a college, we recognise that we play an important role in the local community. This project will allow us to expand our offer of providing opportunities for young people to build connections and develop their skills.”

Franklin Castle from the Model Citizens project added:

“We are very happy with the response from all the young participants. Their commitment has been a fantastic advertisement to young people who are contemplating attending our project in the future.”

By working together, we can tackle the root causes of knife crime and violence among young people and create a safer, more prosperous future for everyone in our community.
