Kirklees College unveil huge handcrafted Poppy Display

Kirklees College unveil five metre knitted poppy display for Armistice Day.

Kirklees College held a special service for Remembrance Day on Monday 11 November. Staff, students and special guests attended the event, which was held in the Atrium at Kirklees College Waterfront building in Huddersfield.

The main focus of the event was the unveiling of a giant knitted poppy display which included over 2000 handmade wool poppies. The floral art display measured over five metres in length and was suspended from a first floor balcony for all to see. The poppies were all knitted and crocheted by teams of staff and students over recent weeks and then hand tied onto a large camouflage netting.

Attending the event were representatives from Help for Heroes and the armed forces charity SSAFA. Visitors were also treated to some poignant and uplifting singing from over 50 members of the West Yorkshire Rock Choir.

At 11am a two-minute silence was observed. Bugle player Heather Wood played ‘The Last Post’ followed by ‘The Reveille’ to mark the end of the silence.

Event organiser’s Julie James and Mel Mills commented: “We wanted to mark Remembrance Day at Kirklees College this year by bringing together as many people as possible. Our team has worked extremely hard to put together this amazing poppy display and this wonderful event. Special thanks go to everyone involved, in particular our special guests and The West Yorkshire Rock Choir. Thank you all very much.’

In addition to the Remembrance Day event, Kirklees College has also been working closely with The Royal British Legion to help raise funds for this vital charity. Public Service students have been involved in activities including collecting funds and selling Remembrance Day merchandise across the college.
