Kirklees College has teamed up with a number of charities this festive season to support their campaigns and spread some festive joy across Kirklees and Calderdale.
For over a month staff across the colleges’ eight centres have been collecting toys for the Yorkshire Children’s Trust Toy Appeal. These toys will be donated to children in hospitals across the region who are unable to go home for Christmas.
Sarah Thompson, Yorkshire Children’s Trust Social Worker and Councillor said: “A big thank you to staff at Kirklees College who have offered us fantastic support again this year with our Christmas Present Appeal. Each of these wonderful gifts will be helping children in hospital this Christmas time.”
The college has also been collecting their fifty pence pieces for local food bank ‘The Welcome Centre’ to donate to their 50p pot challenge. All money collected will go towards providing a meal for a local family on Christmas Day.
In addition, Huddersfield Giant’s legend Eorl Crabtree joined staff and students to take part in a seven-mile walk from Marsden to Huddersfield to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society. The walk was completed in an impressive three hours.
Mel Ferguson, Lecturer in Health and Social Care, Childcare Sport and Public Services; who helped organise the walk said: “Thank you to everyone who joined us on our charity walk to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society and everybody who donated. A special thanks to The Handmade Bakery for their kind donation of hot chocolate and brownies which was a welcome treat to keep us motivated for the rest of the walk.”
