Course Overview
On this course, you will study a specialist machining route alongside the mandatory units to prepare you for a future career in engineering, manufacturing, processing and control. Whilst on your two-year course, you will study how materials, working conditions and context can influence design processes and products. You will also learn about engineering strategies which you will be able to apply in your industry placement.
This course will also cover materials and their properties, which will help you understand more about the materials and products used in engineering. You will test their conditions, quality and the techniques involved to apply
materials in a real-world environment. You will also use a dedicated lab space for your studies which has milling machines and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software.

The course will also provide you with real-life practices to use in future roles, such as engineering drawings, which are technical drawings to provide information about objects and are standard practice in the engineering industry. You will also work with CAD, computer-aided design to digitally create real-world projects before they are manufactured to analyse and improve their quality.
On the course, you will undertake a minimum of 315 hours work in a block industry placement. Your placement will start in the second year of your studies. You will be supported in finding your placement. UCAS points will be attached to this qualification with a value equivalent to three A-levels. Completion of this qualification will give you the opportunity to progress to higher education courses and training.

Core Skills Gained:
A minimum of 5 GCSEs with the following grades: English at 4 or above and maths at 5 or above and 3 other GCSEs at 4 or above including a science or technology course.

HNC/HND, Apprenticeship, Degree
This qualification allows you to progress into roles such as a mechanical engineer, electrical and electronic engineer or civil engineer.
