Course Overview
The course gives you the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin the study of sport and physical activity and offers you breadth and depth to prepare you fully for further study or training or a career in the industry.
The course explores theoretical principles and permits the opportunity to apply real-life sporting situations. You will produce a career plan and study six units, gaining knowledge and broadening your skills in sports coaching and leadership. You will explore the importance of healthy lifestyles and undertake analyses approaches to evaluate sport specific skills, techniques and tactics, rules and regulations.
The course will develop analytical skills and knowledge alongside developing core industry skills such as communication, leadership, organisation and adaptation.
We encourage our students to further their own development by accessing and undertaking extra qualifications in coaching, leadership and first aid. Alongside your course, you can combine learning and playing by joining one of our sports academies for football or rugby league in partnership with Huddersfield Giants.

Core Skills Gained:
A minimum of 5 GCSEs with the following grades: English at 4 or above and maths at 3 or above and 3 other GCSEs at 4 or above including PE or a sports background.
If you have an EHCP then please be aware that the college needs to have agreed, via the consultation period with your local authority, that we can meet the needs outlined in your EHCP before you can start on a course with us.

A sports qualification can lead to a range of careers, including working as a sports coach, fitness instructor, sports cordinator or teacher.
You will be assessed through discussions, group presentations and activities, written assessments, practical demonstrations, fitness tests, logbooks and diaries and observations.
Students will be required to have a Kirklees College sports coaching kit to participate on this course. This can be purchased from gbkits.co.uk.
If you are worried about the cost of this kit then students can apply for support via the student bursary scheme.
