Kirklees College celebrated the graduation of its second Prince’s Trust team. It was an event where college staff, family, friends and community organisations got together to celebrate the success of the seven young people completing an intense 12 week personal development programme.
The 12 week team programme involves an induction, a residential where young people have the chance to try gorge walking, caving, canoeing and abseiling to bring them together as a group.
They also complete a community project, fundraising, work experience and then celebrate by delivering speeches to friends and family.
Some of the key successes from the college’s second programme include fundraising £150 by doing a sponsored walk, chocolate fountain and cake stall and having sponges thrown at their tutor.
This was done in partnership with Tesco, who kindly donated food for the stall. The money raised was used for the community project aspect of the course.
The young people chose to decorate a room and refurbish the garden at the Recovery College in Mirfield. The organisation works in partnership with volunteers and other supporting organisations to develop and run a range of workshops and courses which promote well-being and good mental health.
The young people spent a week there and completely transformed one of the spaces, which had been used for storage, into an additional training room.
After completing all aspects of the programme the young people receive a Level 1 certificate in employability, team work and community skills and then hopefully move onto further employment or training.
Members of this current team are moving on to Apprenticeships and courses at the college, with some making the transition into employment.
The 12 week Prince’s Trust course is open to any young people aged 16-25 who are looking to gain life experience, a qualification and have support to find something which interests them. It is free and you can still claim JSA whilst completing the programme.
