Former Chair of Corporation for Kirklees College, Geoff Alvy is being honoured for his years of service with a commemoratory plaque which is being unveiled at a special ceremony on Wednesday 12th December, at the College’s Oldroyd campus.

Geoff who served on Kirklees Council from 2000 to 2006, was Cabinet Member for Children’s Services and served on many committees, including his membership of two governing bodies – Dewsbury College and the Batley Business and Enterprise College (formerly Batley High School for Boys) where he was chairman for several years and was instrumental in improving the educational presence in North Kirklees.

It was through Geoff’s passion for education and his commitment for the North Kirklees region to thrive that helped lead the development of the Dewsbury Learning Quarter and the opening of Springfield Sixth Form Centre. Not only this, but his idea to develop Pioneer House into a state-of-the-art learning centre for Kirklees College is coming into fruition and will look to open in 2019.

Mr Alvy who is Batley born and bred has been very much involved in college life, not one to shy away from his responsibilities he was adamant he would not be a faceless governor and loved nothing more than meeting the students and seeing first-hand what they had achieved. He would regularly be present at graduations and awards ceremonies before stepping down from the position of Chair in 2017.

“I am very proud to be inducted into the Kirklees College Hall of Fame and join some of the former governors in receiving a commemoratory plaque in honour of my service. I’ve loved being part of such a strong organisation and seeing how the organisation has, and continues to develop. I am looking forward to seeing the completion of Pioneer House and wish all the students past and present the best of luck in their future endeavours, it’s been a pleasure being part of it.”

Geoff will be honoured with a celebration afternoon and a plaque unveiling in front of family, friends and former colleagues which will be followed by a drinks reception.
