Sport (Exercise and Fitness pathway) NCFE Diploma Level 2

This course will give you an introduction to the varying aspects of sport, from the organisation and development of sport to how the body works and principles of fitness training and testing. If you want to pursue a career in the energetic world of sport, this is an ideal starting point.

You will take part in a range of workshops, practical sessions, exercise studio classes and classroom based theory sessions.  There will be opportunities to take part in the sports teams and activities that the college offers and potentially take additional qualifications such as the Sports Leader Award, Emergency First Aid, NCFE in Exercise Studies and FA level 1 Football Coaching.

You will study 3 mandatory units:

  • Participating in sport
    • You will develop your practical skills in sport through organising and participating in sports activities. You will work with others to plan a sports activity, participate in a sports activity and evaluate your own performance and the performance of others following the activity.
  • Anatomy and physiology for exercise
    • This unit will provide you with an understanding of anatomy and physiology in the context of exercise. You will develop your knowledge of the structure and function of the body and how exercise impacts it.
  • Introduction to healthy exercise and nutrition
    • You will explore the effects of exercise in the body, the components of fitness and different types of training and how specific populations (such as people aged 50+) should follow key safety guidelines. In addition you will consider the impact and importance of good nutrition and the health benefits related to this.

You will also study 4 of 19 optional units, including:

  • Sports coaching
  • Physical fitness and injuries in sport
  • Developing sporting skills and tactical awareness
  • Planning and running a sports event
  • Sports volunteering
  • Development of personal fitness through training
  • Preparing to work in the sport and leisure industry

You will also be expected to work towards English and maths as part of your qualification.

Entry Requirements

  • A minimum of 4 GCSEs with the following grades: English at grade 2 and maths at grade 1 or above, and 2 other GCSEs grade 2 or above ideally to include PE or a sports background.

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed with written assignments, oral presentations, practical observations and assessments.


You could enter employment in sports facilities, at a junior level or even on a voluntary basis, whilst working towards your level 2 industry qualifications.

Fees & Funding

You may need to pay some costs for stationery and textbooks. A fee of £45 is required from students at the start of the year to cover a course book and an induction trip. Students will be expected to have suitable sports kit for both indoor and outdoor activities and a whistle (£40 college tracksuit will be needed for fixtures/trips).
