Overview

If you are new to the building industry and want a career in joinery, this course is for you.

You will study 6 mandatory units:

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
    • The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge to be deemed trained to carry out safe working practices in construction to:
      - Sourcing relevant safety information and using the relevant safety procedures at work.
  • Knowledge of technical information, quantities and communication with others
    • The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge to be deemed trained to interpret information, determine quantities and communicate with other in relation to:
      - Processes for disseminating information.
      - Basic concepts of effective communication.
  • Knowledge of construction technology
    • The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge of building methods and construction technology in relation to understanding the basic principles of:
      - foundation construction
      - floor construction
      - wall construction
      - roof construction
      - supply of utilities and services
      - sustainability within construction.
  • Produce woodworking joints
    • The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to be deemed trained to produce woodworking joints in relation to:
      - forming woodworking joints
      - selecting and marking out materials
      - selecting and using hand tools.
  • Maintain and use carpentry and joinery hand tools
    • The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to be deemed trained to maintain and use carpentry and joinery hand tools in relation to:
      - maintaining and storing hand tools
      - using a range of carpentry and joinery hand tools.
  • Prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools
    • The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to be deemed trained to prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools in relation to:
      - maintaining and storing portable power tools.
      - using carpentry and joinery portable power tools.

The course includes formal classroom activities, workbooks, practical sessions in the workshop, and computer based activities.

Entry Requirements

  • A minimum of GCSE English and Maths at GCSE grade 1 or equivalent.
  • It is expected that students complete their current course of study to the best of their ability and maintain a positive approach to continuing their studies.

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed throughout the course, including practical synopsis assessment and a multiple choice online exam at the end of each unit.

Progression

You can go on to study a level 2 diploma in Joinery

You could go on to undertake a joinery apprenticeship after completing the course.

As a full time student, under the age of 19, you will not usually need to pay any course or examination fees.
