Kirklees College Apprentice Maariyah Rawat won a national award for science after getting the top mark in the country.

Maariyah, from Batley, who works for Syngenta in Huddersfield, studied a Level 3 Process Manufacturing Apprenticeship.

After getting the top mark out of all students in the UK doing the qualification, she was invited to London to receive the City and Guilds Award at the Salters’ Institute Annual Awards.

The prestigious annual event celebrates high levels of excellence within the science education sector.

Maariyah said: “I wanted a hands-on job where I would be working and learning and also didn’t want to come out of higher education with a lot of debt.

“Syngenta are committed to ensuring apprentices are treated just like any other employee and if you put the work in and commit to it fully they want you to stay with them for your career – keeping the skills they have helped you develop within their business.

“My message to young people thinking about what to do with their results now or in the future is to consider what you really want and what is the best route for you and your career.”

In 2016 Maariyah also received the 19+ Intermediate Apprentice of the Year award at the Kirklees Apprenticeship Hub Awards.  Her employer Syngenta won the Apprentice Employer of the Year award.
