Students race to design

Thursday 7th of April 2011

Kirklees College students have helped a local race team recreate their identity. Wild Carr Racing wanted to improve their professional image for the team by having their very own logo and having new livery specially designed.

The project appeared to be ideal for a graphic design student and in February the college was contacted to see whether the creative industries department would be interested in working together. Students on the National Diploma in Art and Design course jumped at the opportunity to see their work come to fruition.

The students created some exciting concepts that were developed with the race team. The first race of the season was at Mallory Park on 3 April and so the deadline was quite a challenge, but this was achieved and the designs have helped to create a striking race car.

Wild Carr Racing is a Huddersfield-based team of engineers that prepare and race a Fisher Fury kit car, competing in the RGB championship for road-going motorbike engined kit cars.

Team principal, Henry Carr said, “The college really impressed me with their speed and enthusiasm for the project, as we were on a tight schedule from the start. The students hit the target deadline and developed some excellent concepts, it was a shame that we had to pick just one to take forward.”

Local company Colne Valley Signs and Graphics stepped up to make the designs a reality and have done a fantastic job of making the car grab the attention of spectators.

Brian Jagger led the project at Kirklees College and said, “The project has been a great learning experience for our National Diploma students who have been encouraged by Henry from Wild Carr to develop a variety of solutions to their design brief. I am delighted that the students have risen to the challenge and produced a number of directions for the Wild Carr Racing brand. The tight deadlines for the project have also given the students a taste of the pressures they can expect later in their careers as professional graphic designers.”

“The staff and students at the college's Highfields Centre for Art and Design will be following the Wild Carr team's exploits in the coming season with interest and wish them every success with the car in its new livery.”

The Wild Carr Racing team has another exciting project in progress with the college and is looking forward to visiting the art and design department again soon to see what progress has been made.
