The group of 16-25 year olds who were not in education or employment (NEET) joined the course twelve weeks ago to kick start their efforts to start work or return to education. The course, designed by the Prince’s Trust was delivered by Kirklees College. Tahrina Ahmed and Katy Ashworth, were the course leaders. Tahrina said:

“The course involved lots of team building exercises which are designed to raise the self esteem of learners and uncover hidden talents. The activities included a residential outdoor pursuits stay and they were encouraged to push their own boundaries of achievement.

“During the course we helped the group to find work placements in a range of areas including mechanics, local authority and Oxfam.”

The group established themselves as a team, calling themselves ‘Imagine More Goals – IMG’ and raised money by bag packing in local shops. They invested this, along with their time into renovating ‘Springwood Circle’ in Huddersfield. This area was chosen after talking to local residents about what they would like to see improved.
Tahrina continued:

“The team removed old bins and replaced them with new ones, they painted the fence and the bench used by the public, they cut back bushes which had overgrown and generally cleaned up the area. The team wanted to leave a positive impact on their community.”

In the final stages of the course, the group were given careers advice and help with putting their CVs together to help them go on to work.

Andy Booth presented the achievers with their certificates. He said:

“I’m honoured to present these young people with their awards, and I hope this course has set them on the right track for the future.”

As part of the college-football club partnership, each student will be offered a free ticket to the Huddersfield Town v Tranmere Rovers on Aug 14 in recognition of their hard work in the community.
