Business Development and Training at Kirklees College

Literacy and numeracy

Certificate in Adult Literacy and Certificate in Adult Numeracy

Course duration

Normally 30 hours, delivered in 12 2.5 hour sessions. This may vary depending on the needs of the employees and the organisation.

Dates

Dates to suit the employer. A flexible model can be adopted to allow for shift patterns.

Cost per delegate

All fully funded.

Overview

The level of the programme varies from a basic level up to level 2 (the same skill level as a GCSE grade A*-C). Employees will be assessed at the beginning of the course to determine their current level. The course is then designed to stretch and challenge them, yet be within their reach. Examples of tasks carried out in the workplace can be incorporated into the programme, for example report writing and presentation of data specific to the organisation.

Is it right for me

Anyone who does not already hold a level 2 qualification in maths or English would benefit from the course.

What are the business benefits?

What will the training cover?

The content will vary. Depending on the needs of the company and the employees on the programme, but will generally include the following:

Further courses to consider

Progression through the levels until level 2 in both numeracy and literacy are achieved.

These courses will provide the numeracy and literacy skills required to access other courses, where a deficiency in these skills may have previously been a barrier.

Trainer profile

We have a small team of specialist tutors available to deliver the courses. They are experienced in working with employees of all levels, promoting a supportive environment. Tutors work flexible hours which enables sessions to run in the evening and during the day.

Testimonial

The students' journey back into education has been a positive one. We are all impressed by the interest and dedication shown by the tutor and the genuine quest for ways to improve the learning experience for all students.

The employer feels that the investment made in terms of paid release to attend the literacy and other courses is beginning to reap rewards in terms of a more confident and motivated workforce.

I asked Steve Dyson what gave him the biggest kick in his role as ULR at the company and I think his response sums up the value we put on having a provider that cares.

"When people first come into a class they often have negative ideas of what adult learning will involve - based on their school experiences. I watch their faces as they settle in and really start to enjoy the informal atmosphere that the tutor from Kirklees College creates. As the lessons go on they suddenly realise that they are achieving learning that they never expected in a real fun and enjoyable way. As they leave they always have a big smile on their face and can't wait to get back for the next session."
