If you want to work in the sport and leisure industry, this course is a great first step.

With both practical and theory based lessons, you will cover study 10-12 units (including at least 5 of the first 8):

  • Taking part in exercise and fitness
    • The aim of this unit is for you to be able to find out about exercise and fitness activities in your local area and participate in a range of different exercise and fitness classes.
  • How the body works
    • This unit will provide you with knowledge of the structure and functions of the skeleton, muscular system and cardio-respiratory systems. You will also develop your knowledge of the requirements of a healthy diet.
  • Planning own fitness programme
    • You will learn the different components of fitness and how to train each component in order to improve personal fitness.
  • Assisting a leader of sports or active leisure activities to plan and deliver an activity
    • The unit introduces the planning process involved in sports and active leisure leadership, and you will be given the opportunity to put this into practice by assisting the organisation and delivery part of a sport or active leisure sessions.
  • Working in sport and active leisure
    • This unit will help you develop the work-related skills required in the sport and active leisure industry, which will help you to progress into a job in the industry. You will gain experience of customer service skills, working as a member of a team, and the work requirements in the sport and active leisure industry.
  • Job opportunities in sport and active leisure
    • You will develop a plan for starting work in sport and active leisure by exploring job opportunities across the sector. You will explore conditions of employment and the qualifications and skills required for different jobs within sport and active leisure.
  • Physical activities for children
    • You will find out about, plan and prepare different types of physical activities suitable for children. The importance of the role of the adult in ensuring children’s safety in the provision of physical activities is also considered in this unit.
  • Exploring dance skills
    • This unit will allow you to develop dance skills in practical workshops and to demonstrate them in a performance piece.
  • Investigating rights and responsibilities at work
  • Managing your health at work
  • Safe learning in the workplace
  • Carrying out an individual project
  • Working in a team

You will also be expected to work towards English and maths as part of your qualification.

Entry Requirements

  • A minimum of 4 GCSE’s with the following grades:English and maths at 2 or above, and 2 other GCSE’s grade E or aboveOR
  • A minimum of four GCSEs grade E or above, including English language, and maths at grade F or above, or
  • an entry level 3 qualification, entry level 3 English and entry level 2 maths, and
  • a good interview and reference.

You will also need a strong interest in sport.

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed with written assignments and workbooks, practical observations and oral presentations.

Progression

You can go on to study a BTEC Diploma in Sport level 2.

You can enter employment in the sport, leisure and recreation industries.

As a full time student, under the age of 19, you will not usually need to pay any course or examination fees.
