Overview

You will study 9-12 units including:

  • lubrication systems,
    • This unit is about the basic maintenance of engine lubrication systems for a range of vehicle types
  • cooling systems,
    • This unit is about the basic maintenance of cooling systems for a range of vehicle types
  • fuel and exhaust,
    • This unit is about the basic maintenance of vehicle fuel and exhaust systems
  • ignition systems,
    • This unit is about the basic maintenance of ignition systems on petrol engines, and has the option to cover either basic mechanically triggered or electronically managed systems.
  • electrical systems,
    • This unit is about the maintenance of light vehicle auto-electrical systems.
  • braking systems,
    • This unit is about basic maintenance of light vehicle braking systems.
  • transmission systems,
    • This unit is about the basic maintenance of light vehicle transmission systems.
  • steering and suspensions,
    • This unit is about the basic maintenance of vehicle suspension and steering systems.
  • wheels and tyres,
    • This unit is about the basic maintenance of light vehicle wheel and tyre systems.

The course involves practical work and theory.

You will also complete job cards on work carried out to add to the evidence recorded in your portfolio.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs with the following grades: English at 2 and maths at 1 or above, and 2 other GCSEs grade 2 or above including science or a technology

Assessment Methods

You will complete practical tasks and an internal knowledge test. You will also produce a portfolio of evidence.

Progression

You could go on to study a City and Guilds Diploma in Motor Vehicle Body Repair Operations level 1 or, a City and Guilds Diploma in the Service and Repair of Road Vehicles level 1.

You can go on to employment within the motor vehicle industry.

Fees & Funding

As a full time student, under the age of 19, you will not usually need to pay any course or examination fees.
