Information Communication Technology BTEC Extended Certificate Level 2

You will study 3 mandatory units:

  • The online world
    • This unit will help you understand the main technologies and processes behind the internet and investigate how they come together to let you view websites and send information across the world. You will also explore a range of digital devices, such as smart phones and digital music players and consider the technology that enables these devices to share and exchange information.
  • Technology systems
    • You will explore the common hardware components of technology systems, such as a touch screen or a printer, and the internal building blocks of a computer like the processor, buses and memory. The unit also covers the purpose of networks, which allow different devices within a technology system to communicate.  You will also learn about the role of applications software, such as office programs, graphics packages, accounting software and CAD/CAM, that supports many aspects of everyday business life.
  • A digital portfolio
    • A digital portfolio is an exciting onscreen way to showcase your achievements to potential employers or when applying for a course. You will learn how to create a digital portfolio that includes a series of web pages with links to content that you have created.  You will learn how to make use of multimedia assets such as images, sound and video to make your portfolio appealing and engaging.

You will also study 5-7 of 14 optional units, including:

  • Creating digital animation
  • Creating digital graphics
  • Computer networks
  • Software development
  • Website development
  • Installing and maintaining computer hardware
  • Installing and maintaining computer software

You will be involved in a number of different learning techniques, including:

  • short lectures,
  • demonstrations,
  • self-directed study,
  • practical work,
  • tutorials,
  • online activities.

You will be able to access resources relating to your course using the college Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle).

You will have the opportunity to shadow a qualified computer technician.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs with the following grades:

  • English at 3 or above and maths at 2 or above, and
  • two other GCSEs at 3 or above

Assessment Methods

You will be continually assessed through internal assessments, to nationally set standards.


You can go on to study our BTEC Diploma in IT level 3 course

You could enter employment as a programmer, web designer, computer operator/technician, working on an IT support desk, within PC support, or as a business IT technician.

Fees & Funding

Full time students, under the age of 19 will not usually need to pay any course or examination fees. For fee information students aged 19+ should contact the information office, tel: 01484 437070
