Health and Social Care BTEC Extended Certificate Level 2

This course will give you the experience you need to work in the health and social care sector or to progress in education.


You will gain an understanding of the care sector and the services available within the health and social care fields. You will also develop the skills and knowledge necessary to be an effective worker in the care sector.

You will study 4 mandatory units:

  • Human lifespan development
    • This unit provides you with the opportunity to explore how we grow and develop throughout our lives and to investigate the factors that affect this growth and development. You will go on to consider how these factors are interrelated.
  • Health and social care values
    • What is good practice in health and social care? What ensures that good practice is applied to support individuals who use health and social care services?  Health and social care values underpin good practice within the sector.  In this unit you will gain an understanding of how these care values are applied in health and social care settings, and their importance to work in the sector.  You will apply these values in practice.
  • Effective communication in health and social care
    • This unit will allow you to investigate the different forms of communication and how they are used effectively in health and social care. You will look at the importance of using clear speech, body language that shows that you want to help people, and active listening skills that show you are interested in what people are saying.
  • Healthy living
    • This unit gives you the opportunity to explore how healthy and unhealthy lifestyle choices impact on health and well-being. You will explore how a range of factors contribute to good health and well-being, and other factors that can lead to poor health and well-being.

You will also study 6-8 of 10 optional units:

  • Social influences on health and well-being
  • Promoting health and well-being
  • The impact of nutrition on health and well-being
  • Equality and diversity in health and social care
  • Individual rights in health and social care
  • Human body systems and care disorders
  • Services in health and social care
  • Creative and therapeutic activities in health and social care
  • The health and social care sector
  • The early years sector

The course includes a work placement that will give you valuable practical experience. It is available for school leavers and adult learners.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs with the following grades: English 3 and maths at 2 or above, and 2 other GCSEs grade 3 or above. You will also need to have a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) which the college will pay for.

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed with projects, case studies, work based assignments, coursework and an externally assessed component.


You can progress on to a range of further education course or apprenticeships after completing this course, including:

BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care Level 3

Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care Level 2.

You could find a career in the health and social sector working in one of the following roles:

  • Care assistant with older people or people with disabilities,
  • Nursery assistant,
  • Support worker,
  • Home care assistant,
  • Health care assistant.

Fees & Funding

As a full time student, under the age of 19, you will not usually need to pay any course or examination fees, just like any other college you will be expected to pay for some essential costs.
