English for Literacy Teaching Level 3 Award

This qualification is designed for those who wish to progress to literacy and teacher education programmes, or vocational teachers wanting to progress towards teaching English at L2 or below. There are four mandatory units, all designed to assess the understanding of core issues and concepts in English language study at L3.

Are you a vocational FE teacher wanting to progress into teaching English or literacy? Are you interested in exploring creative and transactional writing, analysing texts and understanding linguistic terminology? The study of English language at Level 3 involves a focus on the systems of pronunciation, words, grammar, meaning and decoding texts.

The course is taught through classroom lectures and blended learning. You are required to attend 20 sessions (including induction and initial assessment)

Different teaching and learning strategies are employed to meet the assessment objectives, including written tasks, group activities, presentations, assessment and discussions. The units are taught by an experienced English teacher, and focus on the vital concepts required to teach reading, writing and spoken communication at L2 and below.

• Analysing English language
• Reading skills
• Speaking and listening skills
• Writing skills

Minimum level 2 qualification in English – GCSE or equivalent

Assessment Methods

The units on the course are assessed through coursework, timed written assessments and a 15 minute spoken presentation/group discussion. There is no requirement to complete practical teaching on the course.
