Elliot Smith, a former Kirklees College apprentice started out his apprenticeship journey with Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing studying towards a Business Admin NVQ Level 2 qualification after finishing school.
Whilst still wanting to develop his educational journey, Elliot knew he also wanted to delve into the world of work and after being unable to find a job he really enjoyed he decided to take the apprenticeship route and he’s never looked back.
Elliot’s apprenticeship at Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing began as an Apprentice System Support Advisor and helped him develop his skills very quickly. In this environment Elliot was given a lot of responsibility which allowed him the freedom to grow and develop his life skills and experience.
As a company Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing provide a lot of opportunities for staff and the company really invests in their employees with staff development available at every stage of a person’s career. This opportunity has allowed Elliot to grow immensely and take on the challenges of completing an apprenticeship, whilst developing his work skills to a higher level.
Elliot said: “The advice I would give to anyone considering an apprenticeship would be to find the right employer who wants to develop you as an employee, be patient; you are starting at the bottom of a business but if you have the capacity and drive, you can make your way up the career ladder. Enjoy the journey and learn all you can from the people around you, but most importantly enjoy the experience.
“Going down the apprenticeship route is definitely the best decision I have made in my life thus far and my career journey has gone from strength to strength. I would encourage anyone to take the apprenticeship pathway.”
After completing his apprenticeship, Elliot started a new role as an Arrears Recovery Officer. He continued his development studying towards his Chartered Institute of Housing Level 2 and is currently a Technical Officer – Supply Chain, where he oversees the spend within the organisation. His typical day is very varied with tasks including managing purchase orders, attending project meetings, meeting suppliers for contract management purposes, market research, hosting events, advertising tender opportunities and liaising with different departments within KNH.
As his drive to succeed continues, Elliot will soon be starting the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply Level 3 qualification and then progress onto the higher levels and eventually to a degree equivalent level. His career goal is to step into management and progress within the Procurement field.
